The Owls started out with an 18-3 rout of Santa Rosa. Elisa Xavier led the way with five goals, while Laura Thompson had four. Amie Prichard, a Mountain View High graduate, and Laura Smith scored two goals each. Foothill goalie Katie Rhynard made 10 saves. The Owls then dropped a 12-9 game to West Valley, a loss coach Bill Henderson attributed to a lack of personnel. "We only have two subs and we were tired," Henderson said. Women's golf Foothill's first conference match of the season was a successful one, with the Owls beating host Yuba 343-407 Sept. 7. Foothill's AnnMarie Lee had the best score of the day, shooting an 81. She was followed by teammates Elizabeth Milam (83) and Barbara Arden (89). Football Mike Aitken, the new women's volleyball coach at Foothill College, inherits a team that barely resembles the 1998 version. Only one player remains from last year's team, which went 19-1 and placed third in the state. Coast Conference MVP Kristi Lezchuk has transferred to a four-year school, as has first-team all-conference players Tara Robertson, Lore Paogofie and Emily Taofa. Makaala Clark and Nicole Durand, both second-team all-conference performers, have moved on as well. Molly O'Leary and Jolene Tam decided not to return for a second year. So that leaves Pharaah Jaimes, a back-row specialist a year ago, as the lone returner. No wonder Arno Dominguez, the coach for the past six years, and his assistant Jason Mansfield abandoned ship after last season. By doing so, they've put the Foothill program - and Aitken - in a tough spot. "We were left with no recruiting from last year," said Aitken, who coached at Del Mar High in San Jose for 20 years, "and we're going through a building process once again." So far, Aitken hasn't even rustled up enough players to field a starting team. When the Owls left for a practice tournament at Cuesta College last Saturday, they had just four players: James, April Lujan, Jennifer Ray and Noel - a player so new to the team Aitken didn't know her last name yet. Aitken planned to fill out the lineup "with a few other kids," he said. The coach hopes more players will come out for the team once school starts Sept. 21. Foothill opened its season with a 33-14 thrashing of host American River last Saturday. |
