The proposed relocation of the Los Altos School District's maintenance yard met some neighborhood resistance last week at a special meeting where preliminary renovation plans for Covington School were unveiled.
Those at the meeting expressed concern about having a maintenance yard in a residential area and protested the new location of the maintenance building, which would cover some existing grass area, according to a school official.
The current maintenance yard has been located on the south side of the Covington School site in two former large classrooms for about 20 years. Under the proposed renovation plan, the maintenance area would move into a metal shed-like building among redwood trees at the back of the school property near Rosita Avenue. Superintendent Marge Gratiot said the placement of the building would enable the district to save the redwood trees, which are about 15-20 years old, as well as the tennis courts and tot lot. She said some grass area would be covered.
The current district offices would move from the six former classrooms and two portable buildings at the front of the school to the existing maintenance area and three portables.
The relocationn of the district offices and maintenance area are part of the district's renovation plan, which includes reopening Covington as the district's seventh elementary school in fall 2001.
Renovation plans for the classrooms and school buildings met little resistance.
The proposed plan includes the renovation of the site's 21 classrooms and multipurpose building and the construction of a library, five classrooms and one lab.
Gratiot said the district would make some revisions. She said the district must submit a finalized plan to the State Architect's Office by December.
