Town Crier Staff Report

Local children and their families will have the opportunity to paint while also learning local history, when a 28-by-15 foot mural is unveiled for painting 3-7 p.m., Saturday.

Located on the wall of a building at 75 Main St., the site is located across from the new Conner Park at the corner of Edith Avenue and San Antonio Road, Los Altos.

The paint-by-numbers mural, designed by Los Altos artist Jim M'Guinness, allows residents to paint in more than 400 spaces. Contributions of $20 per spot for adults and $10 for kids will go toward the purchase of "Olympic Wannabes," a large sculpture of children jumping for joy, for the new park at Edith and San Antonio.

The mural references several milestones in Los Altos' 100-plus-year history, including the railroad that once ran through town, the annual Festival of Lights and pet parades, and the old Los Altos orchards. The slogan across the top of the mural is to read, "Welcome to Downtown Los Altos."

The Los Altos City Council reviewed the mural plan at its Aug. 24 meeting and granted approval based on conditions that included removal after six months and a three-day time limit to complete the paint job.

The project is sponsored by the Los Altos Cultural Association, whose members have applied to the Guinness Book of World Records for what could be "the world's largest paint-by--number painting."

Free refreshments will be offered. A mural sign-up form is located elsewhere in this week's paper.
