The San Jose Clash ensured the first winning season in the club's four-year history with a 2-1 victory over the host MetroStars Sept. 22 in a Major League Soccer game at Giants Stadium.

Rookie goalkeeper Joe Cannon of Los Altos Hills saved a penalty kick for the fourth time this season. Ronald Cerritos set a Clash record with his 14th goal of the season and Dario Brose had a goal and an assist.

Cannon saved the penalty kick just before halftime to enable the Clash to leave the field at the break with a 1-1 tie. Cannon, beaten from the spot only twice this season, dived to his right to deny the MetroStars' Brian Kelly in the 43rd minute.

Cannon also made a diving save on former Clash defender Ramiro Corrales' well-struck free kick in the 80th minute.

The Clash upped its record to 18-12 Sunday with a 2-0 home win over the Chicago Fire. Cerritos had a goal and an assist and Cannon recorded his second shutout of the year.

Cannon kept the Clash from falling behind in the first half by making four saves. His best save came in the 12th minute when he dived right to make a one-handed deflection on a header from six yards out.

"Joe really came up big for us on that one," Clash defender John Doyle said. "He's had a good season for us, especially for a rookie."
