Foothill Roundup

urnovers kill. That's something the Foothill College football team found out first-hand last Saturday in a 34-27 home-opening loss to Merced.

The Owls led 19-0 at intermission, but committed four turnovers in the second half that led to their demise.

"We just didn't play well in the second half," Foothill coach Marshall Sperbeck said. "We didn't hold on to the football and it cost us."

The Owls (2-1) made five turnovers in all and missed a short field goal after a drive stalled at the 4-yard line.

Foothill missed out on another potential score when quarterback Travis Cole tossed an interception at Merced's 10-yard-line. Cole was intercepted three times in the game.

The sophomore made a number of good passes as well, throwing for 250 yards and a touchdown and running for another score.

The Owls racked up more than 500 yards of offense against Merced (1-2).

Foothill halfback Johnnie Gray of Gunn High rushed for 262 yards and two touchdowns and receiver Dwayne Eison caught eight passes for 89 yards.

"We had some great individual efforts," Sperbeck said, "but we just didn't get it done."

The Owls will try to bounce back Saturday when they travel south to play West Hills (1-1).

Women's Water Polo

Foothill improved to 2-0 in the Coast Conference with an 8-2 home win over Consumnes Rivers last Friday.

Mountain View High graduate Aimee Prichard led the Owls (5-3 overall) with three goals, while Annie Veresh and Laura Thompson added two each. Goalie Katie Rhynard made nine saves.

Foothill fifth

Foothill finished fifth in the Coast Conference All-Sport Awards competition, announced Sept. 10. The school scored 121 points.

The award was won by West Valley, which earned 170 points for its athletic success over the 1998-99 season. Chabot (168) was second, De Anza (164) third and Hartnell (124) fourth.
