More than 100 residents in the Loyola School community had signed a petition as of last week urging the city of Los Altos to install a raised rubber crosswalk in front of the school in order to slow down traffic.

Egan Intermediate School unveils renovation plans

Los Altos could see its first two story junior high school as early as next year. The Los Altos School District unveiled preliminary renovation plans for Egan Intermediate School in a special meeting Sept. 23. The plans call for a two-story structure with 10 classrooms, a library and media center and administrative offices, and a new science wing with four classrooms.

A Los Altos High School Athletics Facilities Fund has been established to raise approximately $150,000 for improvements to the new school pool, including a new scoreboard, touch pads and lighting. Supporters said the funding would give the high school a quality facility for regulation competition in swimming, diving and water polo.

Brett Degner of Los Altos and Eric Leneham of Los Altos Hills were part of a UC-Berkeley team that won the adult speed division of the Sand Hill Challenge soap box derby Sept. 26 in Menlo Park. Degner and Leneham are both engineering students at Cal. Mountain View High graduate Degner drove the car, which hit a top speed of 45.6 miles per hour. On the final run, the Cal car covered the 1/2-mile course in 39.51 seconds to defeat Comdisco - a team boasting three bobsledders.

The latest outreach venture at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Los Altos is to sponsor a refugee family. Catholic Charities was the intermediary so that U.S. State Department requirements for sponsorship were met. The family's size and country of origin were learned only one week before their arrival. It was to be a middle-class Muslim family of six from Kosovo.
