When the prominent downtown corner at Edith Avenue and San Antonio Road remained a weed patch for several years, observers grew anxious. Wasn't the city of Los Altos going to do something?
In 1998, officials did, coming up with funding for a landscape plan that included meandering paths, benches, grass and other decorative elements. A dedication for the new park is set for Oct. 23.
They've also come up with a new name, Conner Park, named after the first Los Altos mayor, A. Watson Conner.
We think the city has done a good job to make this park a reality.
However, we're not crazy about the new name and the new "decorative" meadow grass that recalls, well, a weed patch. At least that's how it looks to us when we drive by on San Antonio. We understand a citizen's committee wanted meadow grass. But did they necessarily want another weed patch?
As for the name, why not avoid personality issues altogether and opt for something neutral, like Village Park? Or Founders' Park? This quaint little corner is nice, but could be even better.
But How about applying some good shears to that "decorative grass" in time for the Conner Park dedication?
