Special to the Town Crier

Art in the Los Altos galleries covers all spectrums of self-expression from the traditional to the abstract. This month, numerous artists are displaying their work and most pieces are for sale. The following exhibits are scheduled during October:

Sunbird Gallery

Ingrid Jackson MacDonald is retiring and selling her gallery after 17 years in Los Altos. Ingrid and her husband, Tom, have sold their Los Altos Hills home and are moving to the Carmel area. The gallery will be under new management Nov. 1

MacDonald's retirement sale will include savings from $30 to $3,000. Closeouts include original oils, bronze sculptures, pastels, Southwest art and some nationally-recognized artists' works.

The gallery is located at 333 First St. and is open daily, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for Sunday, when it closes at 4 p.m. For more information, call 941-1561.

ZYT Galerie

Ralph Doerr is featuring a special exhibit of seascapes, landscapes, and floral art by Alexander Dzigurski II. A native of Atherton, he grew up locally and works in a Los Altos studio that he shared with his famous father, Alex Dzigurski, Sr.

Known for his popular seascapes, the artist has been featured in galleries from Carmel to Scottsdale Ariz., and his paintings can be found in some of the world's most prestigious homes.

The Alexander Dzigurski II art exhibit runs through Oct. 30, at ZYT Galerie, 923 N. San Antonio Road in Los Altos. For more information, call 948-6770.

Floy Zitin, a cooperative member of Viewpoints Gallery, said the gallery is changing exhibits again and the competition among artists stimulates creativity.

Art noteworthy: John Burton, who grew up in Los Altos, is the winner of Artist Magazine's 1999 portrait competition. The painter is exhibiting works through Saturday at the Academy Gallery, 625 Sutter St., in San Francisco.

Burton, who quit his graphics design business to pursue painting, also had two paintings voted into the San Francisco Society of Illustrators exhibition last fall.

"I don't try to be a camera," said the 1984 Los Altos High School graduate. "I try to exaggerate the subtle nuances of color to convey mood or emotion.

Burton is the son of Louise and Robert Burton of Los Altos.
