Local Garden Club hosts plant exchange

The Los Altos Garden Club and the Los Altos Recreation Department are sponsoring a plant exchange from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday, in the Hillview Community Center parking lot, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

Everyone is invited to bring their extra plants seedlings, cuttings bulbs, seeds, small shrubs and trees and to take home something new in exchange. For more information, call 964-4955.

Fed women's club helps History House

The Federated Women's Club of Los Altos will sponsor a dessert tea and "Portraits of the Past" at 1 p.m., Friday, at the Garden House in Shoup Park. Members of the San Jose Historical Museums will make the presentation and all funds will go to the Educational House project.

The Federated Woman's Club has had a yearly fund raiser for over 40 years and have donated a pediatric room and cardiac chairs to to El Camino Hospital in the past. They have been instrumental in building the Youth Center and have helped build the curbs for the handicapped and provided benches and waste containers in down town Los Altos.

A donation of $20 is suggested. Tickets may be obtained by calling 408-245-7186 or 941-0241.

Nominees sought for local service awards

The Community Volunteer Awards Committee is seeking nominations for the 17th annual event, scheduled for Dec. 3 at the Los Altos Youth Center.

Nominees should reside in Los Altos or Los Altos Hills and show a history of volunteerism.

The deadline for returning nominations is Oct. 29. Send suggestions to Community Volunteer Awards Committee, P.O. Box 1851, Los Altos 94023.

New training sessions for museum docents

The Los Altos History House Museum welcomes new docents to lead tours of the house.

Training sessions are scheduled for Oct. 20 and Nov. 17.

Harvest Craft Faire Oct. 22 and 22

The Harvest Craft Faire, an annual event at Los Altos United Methodist Church, will be held 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 22, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 23, at the church.

More than 40 local artisans will display their wares, along with hand-made items by the women of the church. An elegant luncheon will be held at noon on Oct. 22.

A supper featuring a variety of home-made soups will be served from 5:30-7 p.m., Oct. 22, and a Saturday cafe will feature sandwiches, pizza and desserts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Child care is offered Friday, Oct. 22. For more information, call Ruth Evans at (408) 984-8976. The church is located at the corner of Magdalena Avenue and Foothill Expressway in Los Altos.

Computer guru at LAH meeting

The Los Altos Hills Historical Society features Oliver Dyla as its guest speaker at the next society meeting, scheduled for 3 p.m., Oct. 24, at Los Altos Hills Town Hall, 26379 Fremont Road.

Dyla, a student at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, will speak on how computers will become "super fast" in the year 2000. Dyla runs his own company, Techno Inside, and has an extensive background in computer maintenance and management.
