Six students from the Pacific Ballet Academy in Mountain View were recently selected, through selective auditions, to attend the following professionally-based schools throughout the United States: San Francisco Ballet School, Mary McCarthy; American Ballet Theatre, Kina Poon, Katie Yang, Andrea Yung and Vivian Chen; Ballet Met, Vivian Chen (scholarship); and Briansky Ballet, Genevieve Yang. Former student Erin McNulty was admitted to the San Francisco Ballet Company as an apprentice.

Samuel S. Jeng, son of Joseph and Marrina Jeng of Los Altos, and Geoffrey E. Bough, son of Edward and Joan Bough of Los Altos, are among the 425 new students entering Amherst College in Massachusetts this fall.

Los Altos resident Brooke Rea recently completed a wilderness leadership course in Wyoming's Wind River Range with the National Outdoor Leadership School. Students backpacked and camped in glacier and forest areas during the 28-day expedition-style course.

Los Altos resident Alexander Degolia recently completed a wilderness leadership course in Idaho's Palisade and Lemhi Mountains with the National Leadership School. During the course, Degolia backpacked in altitudes ranging from 7,000 feet to greater than 10,000 feet.

Los Altos residents David Susman, Jacob Rosenschein and Jane Kim were recently named to the dean's list at Columbia University for earning grade point averages of 3.33 or higher.

Former Los Altos resident Mark Cummings recently starred in London's Tabernacle Theatre production of "Eroica," a play about Beethoven. Cummings is a 1997 graduate of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.

This is the first time Cummings has performed on stage. The producer discovered Cummings in the streets of London.

The following St. Francis High School students were named semifinalists in the 2000 National Merit Scholarship Program: Stephanie Amerian, David Chang, Erika Cheng, Sarah Collins, Joseph Dillingham, Jennifer Evans, Elnaz Franam, Emily Krolak, Sanjeet-Singh Mann, Simon Russell and Rebecca Simmons.
