High School proficiency test

The California High School Proficiency Examination is scheduled for Nov. 13 at Oak Grove High School and the Santa Clara County Office of Education in San Jose.

The test costs $50 and is open to anyone 16 or older, whether enrolled in school or not.

Those who pass the test will receive a Certificate of Proficieny from the State Board of Education, which is equivalent by law to a high school diploma.

ACT test scheduled for this December

The ACT Assessment exam, which is among the leading college entrance and placement exams, is scheduled to be administered nationwide Dec. 11. Registration postmark deadline is Nov. 5. Late registration is Nov. 19. The test fee is $22.

The exam is designed to measure a student's academic achievement and the appropriate course level for college placement. The exam includes four sections: English, reading, math and science reasoning.

The test is accepted by more four-year colleges than ony other college entrance exam, according to test administrators.

Armstrong School seeks alumni

The Charles Armstrong School, a private day school in Belmont dedicated to the dyslexic learner, is searching for alumni from 1968 to the present. If you are an alumnus or know someone who attended the school, call 592-7570, ext. 333, or e-mail alumni@charlesarmstrong.org.

School officials are planning a series of visitation days in which alumni will be invited to speak to current students. An alumni gathering is also planned.

Flea market at Foothill

Foothill College in Los Altos Hills will hold its three final 1999 flea markets from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., this Saturday, Nov. 11 and Dec. 18 in Parking Lot F, 12345 El Monte Road.

The monthly flea market benefits the college's Theatre Guild. The market features a variety of items including antiques, collectibles, jewelry, arts and crafts, plants and clothing.

The market is free. Parking is $2.

'Safe Ride' needs volunteer drivers

Safe Ride is looking for volunteers. The program provides safe and confidential rides home to students from six local high schools in an effort to prevent drinking and driving. The program operates from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., each Saturday and Sunday.

Safe Ride was started in 1984, following a fatal alcohol-related accident involving local teens. The Palo Alto Area Red Cross responded with the program.

Fund-raising effort for LAHS pool

A group of Los Altos High School athletics boosters are seeking to raise approximately $150,000 for improvements to the new school pool.

A Los Altos High School Athletics Facilities Fund has been established to pay for equipment and infrastructure, including a new scoreboard, touch pads and lighting. Supporters seek funding to give the high school a quality facility for regulation competition for swimming, diving and water polo.

Business and individual donations of $1,000 or more will be recognized through permanent, commemorative inscriptions.

Checks may be sent to the Los Altos High School Athletic Facilities Fund, P.O. Box 1681 Los Altos 94023-1681. Contributors should note "pool" on the check.

Bellarmine holds fund-raiser show

Bellarmine College Preparatory will host the 45th annual Mothers' Guild Scholarship Endowment Fund Fashion Show Oct. 22 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. "For The Boys ... Generations of Excellence" will feature a lunch and dinner show. Lunch begins at 11 a.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

Each year the fashion show raises abut $100,000 for the school endowment fund.

Luncheon reservations are $68 per person and dinner reservations are $115 per person.
