The city of Los Altos is scheduled to begin its repaving of portions of El Monte Avenue on Oct. 27-28. While the work is under way, traffic detours will route cars along Cuesta Drive and South Clark Avenue, said Jim Porter, assistant director of public works for the city of Los Altos.

Road repairs throughout town

Road work will be proceeding full steam ahead from last Monday through Nov. 5, throughout Los Altos, said officials from Galedrige Construction.

They advise motorists to expect delays.

All residents directly affected were notified of the exact date their streets were scheduled for repairs, said Molly Galeridge.

Joint city-school traffic committee

The Los Altos City Council approved a joint city-school committee to respond to traffic problems related to the elementary and intermediate schools, at its Oct. 12 meeting.

"There are major traffic issues around our schools," said Councilman Francis La Poll.

The committee will include some city and school staff as well as council and board members and neighborhood representatives.

City bans sale of color-tread tires

At its meeting Oct. 12, the Los Altos City Council voted to ban the sale and use of color-tread tires in the city of Los Altos.

B.F. Goodrich tires, a unit of Michelin, recently announced plans to market tires called Scorcher, with red, blue and yellow tread.

"Red and blue are the two primary colors chosen by gangs," said Lucy Carlton, police chief of Los Altos.

The colored tread also "will encourage dangerous driving," Carlton said, as people try to "leave color markings on the street."
