Retractable modem cords and CD openers are two of the custom imprinted promotional items available from Amy Phillips at Power Promotions.
Phillips, 39, enjoys the constant challenge of creating unique and fresh ideas to promote businesses and events. A longtime Los Altos resident and former board member of the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce and the Los Altos Villages Association, Phillips started Power Promotions in 1990.
Phillips is a former promotional director and gift-for-purchase buyer with a background in clothing retail and textiles. Now Phillips and her assistant each maintain over one hundred accounts, and delight in seeing people pass by in company shirts and hats designed and supplied by Power Promotions.
"It's so much fun," Phillips said. "We work with Microsoft WebTV and when one of their commercials comes on, we say, 'Oh look, there's one of our customers.' Now we even see some of our companies in magazines like Forbes."
Phillips and her husband Vance, a City of Los Altos building inspector, have two small children. Car pools, family and company obligations forced Amy to scale back LAVA duties. In past years, she had helped with the village association's summer festival and chaired the chamber's fall festival.
Phillips says the business has been self-perpetuating since the initial three or four years of networking. "It's been referrals since then. Putting in the Web site will take us to a new level again."
The Power Promotions catalog includes sophisticated and functional items for awards, presentations or gifts. Unusual selections include a leather Cambridge briefcase, a gyrosphere designer gift clock, rosewood and metal desk ensembles, beach towel sand stakes, and specialty candles.
