In the Headlines: An insect dubbed the Oriental fruit fly was discovered in Hawaiian fruit but not in California. The perjury trial of CIO official Harry Bridges began in San Francisco.

In Los Altos: "Should Los Altos Incorporate?" was the subject of the special membership meeting of the Los Altos Citizens Association held at Legion Hall.

Proposition 3 on the local ballot provided for the controversial proposal implementing daylight-saving time during a portion of each year.

The lights on the oak tree at First and Main streets were scheduled to go on for the first time to open the Yuletide season. Jolly-looking replicas of Old St. Nick were to stand guard at San Antonio Road and Main Street to welcome visitors to the village.

The dedication of Hillview School was held following a gala box-social event. Principal Hosley introduced Mrs. J. J. Blach, Dr. Charles Clifton and Richard S. Bullis, school board members. Ardis Egan, school superintendent, presented a short talk.

Rickey's Studio Club "57 Variety" Smorgasbord Luncheon price was raised to 95 cents.

Showing at the Altos Theater: "Gunga Din" with Cary Grant; "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" with Donald O'Connor and Gloria De Haven.

In the headlines: Congress approved the Election Reform Act, limiting contributions to presidential campaigns. Dreyfus offered the first money-market fund for individual investors.

In Los Altos: The City Council voted against City Planner Livingston's general plan recommendation for a park at the 6-acre property located at Miramonte and Portland avenues, thus opening the land for development. There was a rumor that some citizens would file suit against the city to prohibit the development.

Measures J and K, which passed the November ballot, annexed areas of unincorporated county land in the vicinity of Grant Road and Fremont Avenue to Los Altos. The area added 1,000 voters and 300 homes to the then 25,000 population of Los Altos.

George L. Seidman, president of Whitecliff Realty, was named realtor of the year by the Los Altos Board of Realtors.

To find possible ways to save the site from the bulldozer, estimates were submitted for renovation of the historic 73-year-old Griffin Home on the Foothill College campus in Los Altos Hills.
