Lempert won't challenge Sher for state senate

Assemblyman Ted Lempert (D-Palo Alto) announced Monday that he will not be a candidate for State Senate in the 11th district in 2000.

"Running for the State Senate at this time would mean challenging Senator Byron Sher for the Democratic nomination," Lempert said.

"That challenge would be divisive and disruptive for our party. In the final analysis, it is not the right thing to do for the Democratic Party and the residents of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties."

With Assemblyman Lempert completing his final term in the Assembly due to term limits, he could continue serving in the Legislature only by seeking the Senate post. Sher has announced he will seek re-election to his final term in the State Senate.

The 11th District comprises southern San Mateo County and the northwestern part of Santa Clara County that includes the Los Altos area.

New children's librarian began Monday

The Los Altos Library welcomed new children's librarian Michele Benitz, who joined the staff Monday. She started with the county in May 1998 as an intern at Saratoga Library, also a part of the Santa Clara County library system.

She was then hired as an extra-help library assistant in September 1998.

She earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and her library degree from San Jose State University. She became a children's librarian because she loves "helping children discover the magic of reading and learning," she said.

"I look forward to working in such a wonderful community."
