McGuffin received the award at the Los Altos Kiwanis Club's 53rd annual installation of officers, Sept. 24, in the Garden House in Los Altos. "Scott is a energetic person. He took a floundering Key Club at Los Altos High School and put enthusiasm back in the organization," said Dana Johnston, outgoing president. "He met with the Parent Teachers' Association and the principal at the (Los Altos) high school and the Key Club started to serve the community and the school again. He also started republishing the Kiwanis Newsletter. The club letter had become dormant. He took it over and it's now published once a month." As a student at El Toro High School, McGuffin was president of the Key Club. The Kiwanian said he thrives on helping teens, trying to prepare youth for useful citizenship through experiences in volunteer community service. His philosophy has propelled him to represent several Kiwanis districts to Key Clubs International. The Key Club is the world's largest high school service organization with more than 205,000 members in 20 nations. Students commit to serving their community through various activities. "His experiences with Key Club members have been very positive and now he wants to give back to youth," said Mary Ann McGuffin, Scott's wife. "Everyone says he is a good role model for youth." |
