Matthew Sereni of Los Altos Hills recently finished seventh in the western finals of the BET/United States Equestrian Team Show Jumping Talent Search in Los Angeles.

The event, held Sept. 23-25 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, consisted of four competition phases.

In the first Flat Phase, riders performed specific tests of their riding skill without jumps. In the second Gymnastic Phase, riders jump combinations of obstacles. During the third Jumping Phase, competitors negotiated a grand prix style course of fences. In Phase Four, only the top four riders returned and began competition on equal ground.

"The BET/USET Show Jumping Talent Search Finals are comprehensive tests of an individual rider's skills," said Sally Ike, USET Director of Show Jumping Activities. "Those riders who have gained exposure to many different types of horses have a definite edge coming into this exciting competition where strengths on one horse may turn out to be weaknesses on another. Every rider learns something just by competing."
