The team joined the California Youth Soccer Association's highly competitive State Playing League (formerly the Premier League) this season and finished in a tie for third place. World United is one of eight teams to qualify for the postseason, which starts Sunday. The finals are set for Nov. 14. World United posted a 5-3-1 record during the regular season, scoring 21 goals and allowing 13. The squad tied the Almaden Blackhawks for third place. Although World United lost standout striker Verdine Baker to Los Altos High football, newcomer Edward Cranmer-Brown has filled in nicely. The Gunn High junior is leading the team in scoring. Los Altos Hills resident Daniel Hoffman, also a junior at Gunn, has been a consistent play maker in the midfield, delivering several well-placed passes. With the tremendous speed of Los Altos residents Jeff LaBoskey and Sean Mendy and the technical finesse of Mountain View resident Rene Martinez Puente, the defense continues to be menacing against older and more aggressive opponents. World United, which made the CYSA State Cup finals the past two seasons, is guided by Vava Marques, coach at Foothill College and Los Altos High. |
