The defeat dropped the Eagles to 0-4 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 1-7 overall. "They have real good athletes," Los Altos coach Ron Moser said of Santa Clara (4-0, 7-1). "We played a good first quarter and shocked them, but then they woke up and it was 'lookout!'" The Eagles, who entered the second quarter only trailing 7-0, found themselves down 28-7 by halftime. Los Altos' lone touchdown came on what Moser calls "the hitch and pitch," also known as the hook-and-ladder. Tight end Joe Lucky caught a 12-yard pass from Sai Pela and then pitched the ball to halfback Steve Holloway, who ran 74 yards for a touchdown. "That's becoming our signature play," said Moser, whose team scored on a similar play the week before. Holloway rushed for more than 100 yards against Santa Clara and defensive end Brent Brauner had eight tackles. The Eagles travel to Sunnyvale this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game at Fremont. Homestead The St. Francis High football team took sole possession of first place in the West Catholic Athletic League last Friday night with a 14-3 win over visiting Bellarmine. The Lancers, who improved to 3-0 in league and 7-1 overall, need to win one of their final two games to clinch the WCAL title. St. Francis plays St. Ignatius (1-2, 6-2) at 2 p.m., Saturday at San Francisco's Kezar Stadium and then hosts Serra (1-2, 3-5) at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 12. The Lancers overwhelmed the Bells (2-1, 4-4) with a rushing attack that accounted for 272 of the team's 306 offensive yards. Two St. Francis rushers exceeded 100 yards: Gilchrist Fabian (124) and Sione Taufoou (116). The Lancer defense held rival Bellarmine to just 51 yards rushing and 194 overall. The Bells' only points came on J.D. Cockroft's 48-yard field goal in the third quarter. St. Francis scored both its touchdowns in the opening quarter, the first of which was set up by the defense. Forrest Mozart forced and then recovered a Bellarmine fumble on the game's initial play. Taking over inside the Bells' 30-yard line, St. Francis needed just three plays to reach the end zone. On third-and-10, quarterback Pat Dillingham tossed a 26-yard scoring strike to receiver Chase Lyman. The Lancers added to that lead on their next drive as fullback Benard Thomas scored on a 25-yard run. Homestead also wound up on the losing end of a lopsided score, falling 46-0 to host Palo Alto last Friday. The Mustangs, who sunk to 0-4 in the SCVAL De Anza Division and 2-5 overall, trailed 19-0 at halftime. Homestead takes on Saratoga at 7:30 p.m., Friday at Los Gatos High. |
