1-story overlay zone not recommended
Published on 11/10/1999

The Residential Design Guidelines Task Force will not be recommending a one-story overlay zone for Los Altos. The decision was reached Nov. 3, after the task force reviewed community input from the August town hall meeting.

However, Planning Director Larry Tong said that a dissenting minority report will be prepared by some members of the task force who favor the one-story overlay concept which would not allow two-story additions in certain areas.

The issue of two-story additions to homes in "one-story neighborhoods" has been growing in intensity over the past few years.

In an effort to guide residents through the design process for remodels and additions, the Los Altos City Council appointed a task force nearly two years ago to come up with suggestions.

The task force recommendations for the residential design guidelines will be going to the city staff for analysis, Tong said.

The planning commission will hold a public hearing on the task force recommendations for the design guidelines in December or January, Tong said.

PC OKs restaurant at Club Mirage site

The Los Altos Planning Commission last Thursday voted unanimously to encourage a "bona-fide, well-managed, well-maintained restaurant" at the site of the former Club Mirage.

The city shut down Club Mirage in September for operating as a nightclub.

The owners have been meeting with the city staff about reopening as a Piccolo's Restaurant and cocktail lounge.

The concept is to serve "private groups, with dinners and receptions," said Planning Director Larry Tong.

The new restaurant would combine typical restaurant operations with private function catering.

The next step is for the project to come before the city council at either its Nov. 22 or Dec. 14 meeting, Tong said.

Los Altos Council changes meeting date

The Los Altos City Council has changed its next meeting date from Tuesday, Nov. 23, to a Monday, Nov. 22.

There will be a special council meeting on Nov. 23 to install the new mayor and mayor pro tem. But the meeting will be "ceremonial," said City Clerk Carol Scharz. The business meeting is now scheduled for Nov. 22.

The council meets at 7 p.m. in the Los Altos City Hall, 1 N. San Antonio Road.

No one hurt in MV fire

A one-alarm fire Nov. 3 at a downtown Mountain View restaurant caused an estimated $5,000 in damage, city fire officials reported last week.

No one was injured in the fire at Man Bo Duck Restaurant, 360 Castro St. The fire, reported at just after 10 a.m., occurred when the restaurant was closed. Surrounding businesses were not affected by the fire. Responding personnel included 15 firefighters, three engines, one truck and one rescue unit.
