Election turnout highest in county

The Los Altos electoral district had the highest registered voter turnout in Santa Clara County, according to figures provided by the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.

The registrar noted a 40.1 percent turnout in Los Altos for the Nov. 2 election. There are 18,123 registered voters and 7,269 of them voted absentee or at the polls, according to Nov. 3 statistics provided by the registrar.

City Clerk Carol Scharz noted the last two council elections drew 29.1 percent and 39.9 percent for the November 1997 and November 1995 elections, respectively.

Los Altos term limits passes overwhelmingly

Measure G, an initiative limiting Los Altos council candidates to no more than two consecutive terms, was overwhelmingly approved in the Nov. 2 election.

Results showed 5,248 voters, or 76.1 percent of those voting, approved the term limits measure. Only 1,650, or 23.9 percent, voted no.

The measure originated with efforts by Los Altos Councilman King Lear.

"Our present term-limit policy is unenforceable," Lear said in a June letter to the editor. "When it was established, the number of terms served by an incumbent could not be limited by law. That has since changed."

Supervisorial candidate meets with residents

Dolly Sandoval, a candidate for Joe Simitian's fifth district seat on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, will be at the Los Altos home of Lee and Martin Gorfinkel at 7 p.m., Nov. 18 to discuss issues and answer questions. To RSVP, call 941-8519.

Sandoval is among several candidates vying for the fifth district, which includes Los Altos, Palo Alto and Mountain View. Simitian is not seeking re-election.

The election for the seat will be held in March 2000. If none of the candidates receives a majority vote, a run-off election will take place next November.
