Many Los Altos and Los Altos Hills residents joined 550 other guests Oct. 23 in the rotunda at San Francisco City Hall for the 47th Jewel Ball.

The dinner-dance and silent auction raised approximately $100,000 to benefit pediatric services at Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at the University of California at San Francisco.

Local residents who attended included Mr. and Mrs. Chip Dostal, Dr. Larry Shapiro, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Dawes and Dr. Harvey Cohen.

Alice Ravetti, chairwoman of the Jewel Ball, welcomed guests, including Mayor Willie Brown, California Attorney General Bill Lockyer and State Senator Liz Figueroa.

The benefit's spokeswoman, Karen Malekos Smith, said the donations go to very ill children whose parents cannot afford large medical bills.

The money will also assist neo-natal intensive care units by providing a range of assistance, from crib bumpers to kidney transplants.
