The Los Altos Discovery Shop presents a holiday fashion and jewelry show fund-raiser Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at 243 Main St. in Los Altos. All profits go to the American Cancer Society.

Ardy Bazarian, manager of the shop, said the upscale resale store's Sunday event will feature festive clothes, estate jewelry and furs, many modeled by the volunteers; and a silent auction, the highlight of which will be a doll house and a scale model of an airplane, donated by the Kellogg-Van Rheeden family.

The 50 Discovery Shops in California are run by the American Cancer Society raised more than $5 million for fiscal year 1998-99. Funds are used for research and educational and family service programs. The Discovery Shops provide an opportunity for the general public to make a measurable contribution toward finding a cure for cancer.

The Los Altos Discovery Shop, with only one paid employee and 80 volunteers, had a profit of $325,000 in 1998.

Bazarian said the success of the Los Altos Discovery Shop depends on volunteers willing to give their time, talents, and energy to staff the shops and keep them open every day. She indicated that people can support the shop by volunteering as little as eight hours a month.

Another way to support Discovery shops is to donate. The shops are always looking for good used furniture, gently-worn clothing, household items, books, jewelry, antiques and estate items.

Finally, Bazarian said people should shop at the Discovery Shop. "The merchandise is great, the prices are great and the service is the best you will receive anywhere," she said.
