Children's Book Week celebrated in Los Altos

To celebrate national Children's Book Week, last Monday to next Sunday, parents may bring their children or grandchildren to the Los Altos or Woodland libraries. The libraries have many new book lists for all ages, as well as a variety of fiction and nonfiction.

The Los Altos Library offers four story times each week: toddlers, ages 2-3, from 10:30-10:50 a.m. on Tuesdays; preschool, ages 3-5, from 10:30-11 a.m. on Thursdays and Fridays; and bedtime story time, ages 3 and up, from 7-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

The Woodland Library offers story time for ages 4 and up from 7-7:30 p.m. on Mondays. National Children's Book week encourages the enjoyment of reading for young people.

Great Decisions lecture series

The Los Altos library, League of Women Voters of the Los Altos-Mountain View Area and the American Association of University Women are presenting a discussion series, titled, "Great Decisions," beginning Feb. 7, 2000.

The program is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, which also prepares a briefing book that is the foundation of the series.

Participants meet 10 a.m. to noon, every Monday in February and March, except for Feb. 21, in the Community Room of the Los Altos main library, 12 S. San Antonio Road.

Topics include "U.S. Interests in the World: Time for a Redefinition," and "Russia: Report Card on Survival."

Briefing books will be available in January but must be ordered and paid for by Dec. 20. The cost will be approximately $15.

Rhododendron Society meets

The American Rhododendron Society, De Anza chapter, will feature the program, "How to Grow Tropical Rhododendrons," at its next meeting, 7:30 tonight at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

Girl Scouts aiding homeless

The Girl Scouts' Shelter Program provides after-school educational experiences to more than 400 homeless children at four separate county shelters. The program offers help with leadership skills, decision making, conflict resolution and recreational activities.

Elena Road in LAH closed through Nov. 19

A section of Elena Road located between Natoma Road and Purissima Road will be closed to traffic today through Friday, during the hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The road closure is necessary to improve the storm drain system.

Dance Dialogues at Los Altos Library

The San Jose Cleveland Ballet will present a program on "The Nutcracker: A Child's Guide to Watching Ballet," at 7:30 tonight, in the Program Room of the Los Altos Library. This program is the second in a series of Dance Dialogues.

The program's focus on the ballet company's season productions will be accompanied by video and/or slides.

New training sessions for museum docents

The Los Altos History House Museum welcomes new docents to lead tours of the house. Training sessions are scheduled for today.
