Both teams were seeded eighth in their respective brackets, which meant each of them had to go up against the top seed last Friday. The men lost 22-7 to West Valley at Diablo Valley College. The women fell 11-0 to Sierra at Merced College. The Foothill men finish the year with a 16-13 overall record. Although the women (15-7) were shut out, coach Bill Henderson wasn't disappointed with his team's effort. "We played well," he said. "Sierra is one of the top three teams in the state, and I'm actually pretty pleased we were able to hold them to 11 goals. They have a fantastic goalie who didn't let anything in." Basketball The opening weekend of the season turned out to be a good one for both the Foothill men and women. Led by Stacy Hanstad, the women captured the Santa Barbara Community College Tournament. The Owls beat Irvine Valley 75-62 in Saturday's first round and then beat host Santa Barbara 71-56 in Sunday's championship game. Hanstad led Foothill in scoring both days, pouring in 17 points against Irvine and 15 against Santa Barbara. The men clobbered Cabrillo 95-76 last Saturday in Los Altos Hills. Six Owls scored in double figures. Volleyball Owls need late touchdown pass from Cole to beat Gavilan 45-39 The Foothill College football team learned a valuable lesson last Saturday night in Morgan Hill. Records can be deceiving. The Owls, ranked 10th in the state, needed a touchdown in the game's closing seconds to beat lowly Gavilan 45-39. "They played a lot better than a 1-7 team, "Foothill coach Marshall Sperbeck said of Gavilan, which sunk to 1-8 with the loss. "We were lucky to get out of there with a win." The Owls (7-2) found themselves down 39-38 after Gavilan scored a touchdown with 45 seconds remaining. That proved to be all the time Foothill needed to retake the lead. Actually, it was more than enough time. The Owls went on a 70-yard drive capped by quarterback Travis Cole's 20-yard touchdown strike to receiver Mike Rigell with five seconds left. Halfback Johnnie Gray played a key role in the winning drive, accounting for 50 yards. For the game, the Gunn High graduate ran for 290 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries. Gray, a sophomore, leads the nation in rushing. Cole completed 15-of-30 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Rigell caught five of those passes for 90 yards and a pair of scores. The Owls close out the regular season this Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game against San Mateo (4-5). Foothill fell 15-6, 15-17, 15-6, 15-13 to first-place Chabot last Friday in Los Altos Hills. The loss dropped the Owls to 2-7 in conference play and 3-8 overall. |
