Two new developments have given the upcoming Millennium Celebration in Los Altos an unexpected bonus.

First, the Bank of Los Altos has agreed to underwrite the cost of the custom-made champagne glasses and the free glass of champagne for the midnight extravaganza.

Second, Los Altos Hills residents Steven and Michele Kirsch have contributed $10,000 to the event. "My wife wanted to go and I thought it was a good cause as well," said Steven Kirsch, founder of Infoseek.

Proceeds from the Millennium Celebration are slated for the new 8,200-square-foot Education Center at the Los Altos History House Museum. The Education Center, which is currently under construction, will include two permanent exhibit rooms, storage space for museum archives, and office and meeting space.

"Steve and Michele are committed to the community," said Kathleen Gwynn, president and chief executive officer of the Steven and Michele Kirsch Foundation. "The event will benefit a Los Altos organization, and helping educational endeavors is important to Steve and Michele."

"We're delighted to contribute the champagne glasses and the first glass of champagne at midnight," said Jim Wall, president of the Bank of Los Altos.

"Attendees will be able to toast the new Millennium (or the old one) and take home an attractive memento of the event. It'll also be a nice reminder that the bank is the only community bank to have operated in Los Altos during two millennia."

The Millennium Celebration for Los Altos and Los Altos Hills residents is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., Dec. 31-Jan. 1, on the grounds of the Hillview Community Center. The event, under a climate-controlled tent pavilion, will include a sit-down dinner, live entertainment, a surprise midnight "extravaganza," video games and an arcade with disc jockey for kids, ages 8-18, and child-care options. Costs are $450 per person for the dinner, or $75 after 10:30 p.m. for the entertainment and midnight activities. A portion of both fees are tax deductible.
