Los Altos, Los Altos Hills honors volunteers

Thirteen residents of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills were added to the list of 166 individuals who have received the Joint Community Volunteer Service Awards during a luncheon last Friday at the Los Altos Youth Center.

The awards have been given since 1982. Guest speakers Roy and Penny Lave told the audience the time had come to give thanks to the important people in the community.

The annual Joint Service Awards were founded by two city councilmembers 17 years ago, Jane Reed, representing Los Altos, and Mary van Tamelen, representing Los Altos Hills.

This year's Los Altos residents receiving awards were:

Mike Abrams, for five years of involvement and leadership in the betterment of schools in Los Altos. A parent volunteer, he is PTA co-president of Santa Rita School.

Steve Aced for his efforts to preserve and maintain historic houses and buildings in Los Altos.

Robert D. Adams for his work to improve and enhance services to youth and his availability and volunteering at Alta Vista High School where he was the basketball coach.

Anne Battle for her numerous accomplishments in fund-raising events and as president of the Los Altos High School Booster Club.

Leslie Carmichael for her involvement in bettering the lives of children through programs in the Girl Scouts and the Los Altos United Methodist Church. Through her volunteering, one in every three girls in Los Altos are in the Girl Scouts.

Jeanine L. Connor for her leadership, restructuring and streamlining the Los Altos Educational Foundation and her ability to communicate in many educational committees.

Marge Filson for her role in helping seniors and sick children in by creating "Monkey Toys" for patients at the Lucille Packard Hospital. To date, more than 10,000 dolls have been made.

Judy Van Dyck, for her committed service to neighborhood, church and community as a nurse and breast cancer survivor and coaching boys' and girls' basketball.

Liz and Paul Nyberg, for their team efforts in creating the Town Choir, furthering the fine arts, the Los Altos Historical Museum and for helping found the Los Altos Mediation Program.

Los Altos Hills residents receiving awards were:

Sharyn Brown for enhancing the environment of Los Altos Hills by leading the Environmental Design and Protection Committee and for her work on the Board of Directors of Westwind Barn.

Doni Hubbard for her activity in numerous organizations particularly those involving horses, local trails, California history and music and arts.

Sid Hubbard for his commitment to build strong kids and families through the YMCA and for contributing his expertise to local schools and the Los Altos Hills County Fire District.

This year's Joint Community Volunteer Service Awards Committee comprised Franz Anderson, Marla de Broeker, Sheila Faillace, Gus Carmel and John Moss. Los Altos Hills residents are: Roger Burnell, Sandra Humphries, Bob Johnson, Bob Stutz and Barbara Vetterlein.
