City compliance for ADA ramps

The Los Altos City Council voted on Nov. 22 to apply to Santa Clara County for community block grant funds, previously allocated for renovation of a cottage at Redwood Grove in Los Altos, for ADA accessibility projects.

In a survey last summer, volunteers identified 318 additional ramps that should be installed around Los Altos, per the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act.

A ramp costs about $1,200. The city currently has $33,000 for improving handicap access, said Jim Porter, assistant public works director, in a staff report.

Ramp locations for the current funds have been identified by the city's bicycle advisory committee. It established a priority process for ramps based on school areas and libraries, completing intersections where ramps currently exist, bus stop areas, commercial areas and completing corridors to fill in gaps, Porter said.

It will take an additional $350,000 to complete the ramps, Porter said.

Man with knife attacks woman

Los Altos police are looking for a male suspect who threatened a woman in the stairwell of a business in the 4400 block of El Camino Real on Dec. 1.

According to police, the suspect approached the victim shortly after 11:30 a.m. and displayed a knife. He made threats and grabbed the victim, police said, before the victim freed herself and escaped without injury.

The suspect was described as black, about 25 years old, 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. He was reported to be clean-shaven and last seen wearing a red zippered jacket and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Detective Mark Laranjo at 948-8223.
