It was a cause for celebration Dec. 1 as Los Altos Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation Center was chosen as the number one facility in the Covenant Care Inc. organization.

"This is a real shining star in our organization. We visit a lot of facilities, but you get the feel when you walk in the door this building is special," said Jeffrey McKain, chairman of the board of Covenant Care, Inc. "We picked this facility because of its excellence in patient service and community involvement."

The chairman's award was given to the Los Altos Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation Center as the No. 1 facility out of the 27 facilities in the California division serving more than 3,000 patients.

Tracie Murray, chief executive officer of the Los Altos operation, said the facility was chosen because of high customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, good performances on state and federal inspections, high occupancy rates, good relations with acute hospitals and community involvement.

As each department head at the facility received their award for excellence, many commented on the importance of giving dignity to residents at the facility.

"When you treat the residents with dignity, they treat you back with dignity," said food director Lydia Rangel. "We are encouraged to work as a team.

"Ever since Tracie came to this place, the care has improved. We have little turnover, and we can live by our mission statement."

The Los Altos Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation Center is a long-term care facility. Residents come to the facility because it is certified by Medi-Cal and Medicare and can provide resident health services.

Los Altos Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation Center is owned by Covenant Care, Inc. from San Juan Capistrano and is located at 809 Fremont Ave., in Los Altos.
