Scenes of the holidays

At no time does Los Altos better display its small-town flavor than during the holiday season. From the Festival of Lights Parade right after Thanksgiving, to visits from Santa at Rancho Shopping Center right through Christmas Eve, Los Altos is filled with familiar holiday images. Town Crier photographer Monique Schoenfeld captures some of these images in a special photo essay for this issue, such as a bellringer from the Los Altos Rotary Club, carriage rides downtown and the canned food drive for the Community Services Agency.

Local speedsters beware. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors has approved a request from the California Highway Patrol to use radar to enforce the speed limit on Mora Drive between Eastbrook Avenue and Terrace Drive in unincorporated Santa Clara County. The posted speed limit on this stretch of road is 25 mph.

Los Altos City Council goes ahead with budgeting economic development position

The Los Altos City Council repealed an eleventh-hour emergency action on Dec. 14 that it had passed last month. The emergency action required the city manager to seek council approval before filling any vacant position in the city work force. Now the city has the go-ahead to hire an economic development coordinator - a position local business owners say could revitalize downtown.

Los Altos police officers have joined together with colleagues throughout Santa Clara County for the annual 17-day "Avoid the 13" holiday crackdown on drunk drivers, which began last Friday.

Los Altos raises speed limit, hopes to ticket more speeders

Alocal speed limit just went up in Los Altos. At its Dec. 14 meeting, the Los Altos City Council agreed to raise the speed limit on Springer Road from 25 mph to 30 mph - a change necessary in order to lower the average speed of motorists who use the street, according to city officials.

El Camino Hospital raises pension payments, adds employee mental health services

The El Camino Hospital board voted unanimously, at its Dec. 8 meeting, to approve pension plan increases, to decrease the malpractice liability account and to approve financing to extend a mental health assistance program. The hospital district board approved the hospital's quarterly financial report at its meeting later that evening.
