Winter Solstice, commonly called the first day of winter, begins. Observers estimate the full moon tonight will appear about 14 percent larger than it does at apogee (the point in its orbit that is farthest from the earth). It also is estimated that the sunlight striking the moon is about 7 percent stronger, making it appear even brighter.
