Los Altos resident Dawn Scott takes her children on a special birthday horse-and-buggy ride around downtown Los Altos last Thursday night. Marshall, middle, and Farris, right, celebrated their 2nd and 3rd birthdays on the same day. The half-hour rides, offered through the Los Altos Village Association, accommodate four to six people. "We can't take any more reservations," said Kathleen Byrne, executive director of the association."They have been extremely popular."

This is the second year the Village Association has been offering the rides.

At no time does Los Altos better display its small-town flavor than during the holiday season. From the Festival of Lights Parade right after Thanksgiving, to visits from Santa at Rancho Shopping Center right through Christmas Eve, Los Altos is filled with familiar holiday images. Town Crier photographer Monique Schoenfeld captures some of these images in a special photo essay for this issue, such as a bellringer from the Los Altos Rotary Club, carriage rides downtown and the canned food drive for the Community Services Agency.
