The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors has approved a request from the California Highway Patrol to use radar to enforce the speed limit on Mora Drive between Eastbrook Avenue and Terrace Drive in unincorporated Santa Clara County. The posted speed limit on this stretch of road is 25 mph. "Speeding in our neighborhoods was a frequent concern raised by residents," said county Supervisor Joe Simitian. "I'm pleased we're moving forward to improve neighborhood safety." Traffic enforcement in the unincorporated county is the responsibility of the Highway Patrol, which may only use radar to enforce the speed limit if the board of supervisors passes a resolution that they do so. Two-story condos OK'd for 2nd Street Downtown Los Altos is slated to get four, three-story condominiums. The Los Altos City Council approved the proposed project for 104 Second St. at its Dec. 14 meeting. The condominiums will replace the existing single-family home currently on the site. Because the homes are set on an unusually small site for such a project, the council approved a variance that will allow the developer to place each unit's parking at street level. The city requires that each unit have one covered and one uncovered parking area. If a development is less than 30,000 square feet, half of those parking areas must be underground. In a report to the council, the planning commission recommended that the city allow street-level garages "because of the small scale of the project and the hardships of developing a basement parking garage." Councilman Lou Becker said he believed the project was an attempt to put too much into a small space. "This is not the kind of housing you typically put in Los Altos," he said. "You're putting cars out in front of someone else's yard. That's out of balance in my thinking. I don't support front-yard parking." - Linda Taaffe |
