Mountain View

Mountain View High won its first game of the season last Saturday in the Fremont-Sunnyvale Holiday Tournament, defeating Silver Creek 36-32.

The Spartans were led by Kevin Hsu (13 points) and Bill Kaspar (9).

Mountain View (1-7) jumped out to a 12-4 first-quarter lead and went up 24-15 by halftime. Silver Creek (0-8) went on an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans managed to hold on.

Gunn

Host Fremont surprised Gunn High 47-40 last Saturday in the third round of the Fremont Holiday Tournament.

The Titans (6-5) led 13-11 at half, but were out-scored 18-9 in the third quarter and never recovered. Steve Baker paced Gunn with 16 points and Anthony Rea added 11.

Homestead

Homestead High dropped to 1-7 on the season with a 51-41 loss to Piedmont Hills last Saturday in the Fremont Holiday Tournament.

The Mustangs' top scorers were Brad Sasaki (13 points) and Taylor Carpenter (9).

Pinewood

Perhaps weary from playing seven games in 10 days, the St. Francis High boys basketball team sputtered offensively in a 58-49 loss to Grant last Saturday in the championship game of the Amador Valley Classic in Pleasanton.

The previously undefeated Lancers shot just 31.4 percent (22 of 70) from the field and missed 15 of their 18 three-point attempts.

Yet they were still in the game midway through the fourth quarter against undefeated Grant, a team from Sacramento that beat St. Francis in the Northern California Division II semifinals last year and went on to win the NorCal title.

A basket by forward Kamao Shaw put St. Francis ahead 49-47 with 3:48 remaining. But Grant star Ronald Dosty tied the game 26 seconds later, igniting an 11-0 run to the end the game.

The 6-foot-5 Dosty proved more than the Lancers could handle in the low post. He wound up with 27 points, 26 rebounds, two blocks and the MVP trophy.

"He did a nice job using his vertical skills and upper body strength," said St. Francis coach Steve Filios, who saw his team fall to 6-1 on the year. "He's a very gifted athlete."

The game might have been different if St. Francis had 6-10 Patrick Denehy or 6-6 David Chiyotti in the lineup. Injuries have prevented both players from spending even a minute on the floor this season.

Filios is hopeful Denehy (knee) will return in two or three weeks, but doesn't expect Chiyotti (wrist) back for at least another month.

In the meantime, St. Francis is relying on Shaw, Troy Bienemann and Chase Lyman - players all under 6-5 - to rebound and score inside.

The trio combined for 18 points Saturday, with Bienemann and Shaw scoring eight apiece. Grant (6-0) out-rebounded the Lancers 42-35.

St. Francis also came up short at the foul line. The Lancers shot just four free throws - making two - while Grant was 12 of 26 from the stripe.

"We would have liked to shoot more free throws," Filios said, "but we didn't put ourselves in position to get more."

The Lancers leading scorer was guard Jermel Gilliard, who tallied 10 points.

Gilliard and Shaw were both named to the all-tournament team. Gilliard scored a team-high 40 points over three-day tourney and Shaw tallied 19 points and 15 rebounds.

In Friday's 68-39 semifinal win over Manual Arts of Los Angeles, Gilliard poured in a game-high 19 points and nailed three three-pointers. Manuel Arts came into the game undefeated at 3-0.

With the holidays nearing, the Lancers will get a much-needed break before hosting their own tournament, which starts next Monday.

"It's time to step back and regroup," Filios said.

Pinewood School lost 46-43 in overtime to College Prep last Friday in Los Altos Hills. The Panthers (3-6) were out-scored 3-0 in the extra period.

Pinewood was led by Marco Gardner (15 points) and Yavuz Ayter (11).
