Pinewood School coach Michael Tetzlaff said this season's team is the best he's had in his four years at the helm.

The Panthers enter the holiday break leading the Private Schools Athletic League with a 6-0 record and are 7-2 overall.

"So far so good," said Tetzlaff. "We're playing well and some of the other teams, like perennial rival Castilleja, don't seem to be as good as they were in previous years."

Much of Pinewood's success can be attributed to midfielders Tracy Ratko and Linda Crites, the team's leading scorers.

"They're an awesome combination," Tetzlaff said. "They really keep the team together."

Crites scored twice Friday in a 4-0 win over King's Academy.

The Homestead High boys soccer team last Saturday captured the consolation championship of its own Christmas Cup tournament.

The Mustangs beat Woodside 1-0 on a goal by Anthony Herrern, who was assisted by Owen Kennedy and Jason Chang.

Kennedy and Chang, along with teammates Kenny Suwa and Omar Gusmao, made the all-tournament team. Suwa also took home the Golden Boot Award.

In other local action last week, Lynbrook beat visiting Los Altos 4-1 Friday in an SCVAL De Anza Division match-up. Verdine Baker scored for the Eagles, who fell to 0-2 in the division and 4-3-1 overall.

That same day, host Mountain View lost 1-0 to Santa Clara. The loss dropped the Spartans record to 0-1-1 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 3-4-3 overall.

Los Altos tallied 177 points to win the Lynn Dyche Classic last Saturday at James Lick High. Westmont was second with 169.

Three Eagles won their weight classes: Cesar Valle (135 pounds), Ian Bailey (145) and Anthony Davis (215).
