Back to Los Altos Town Crier

A thank-you to interested readers from Los Altos Historical Museum

On behalf of all the members of the Association of the Los Altos Historical Museum and all the participants of the association's Oral History Program, we wish all Los Altans and their families a very happy new year. We also extend a sincere thank you to the readers of the Town Crier who have read and responded so favorably to the "Voice of the Past" Millennium Project, a collection of reflections and memories of long-term Los Altos residents.
Published on 12/29/1999

This Association Millennium Project was made possible by the volunteer History House Oral History Project directors, Irene Grenier and Donna Shoemaker, with very special thanks to contributing writer Donald McDonald.

History House Association salutes current and past Los Altans who have shared and continue to share their memories of Los Altos in recorded interviews. These are the people who realize that their personal life stories and memories are also a vital part of a memory collection we would lose as Los Altans if not for the generosity they have so graciously extended to the volunteers of the Association of History House Museum. All recording tapes are retained in our archives and transferred to printed/text format, and are currently being transferred to audio CD format to facilitate scanning and access in our new Educational Center, scheduled to open in 2000.

Beginning Jan. 5, 2000, we will return to the regular "Pages of the Past" format with reflections of "Twenty-five Years Ago" and "Fifty Years Ago" in Los Altos. From time to time, a column will be devoted to an individual history or recollection of an historic area of Los Altos.

Copies of any single 1999 column can be obtained by mail or e-mail through the association office or our e-mail address below. Specify the period or area of your interest (Depression, early settlement, prune harvesting, etc.), interview name, or publication date.

We particularly thank the participants and the families of those who allowed their recorded memories to be adapted to this column and shared with readers during the last twelve months:

Carl Shoup, E. O. Huttlinger, Tom and Barbara McCarthy, Nancy Herbert, Robert Golden, Sue Gallagher, Armond King, Lee Schink, Joe Marvin Jr., Arah Love, Olive Swete Spencer, Ruth Scherrer, Robert Bleiber, Ruth Anderson, Carol Taylor Pavlina, Gordon Ansley, Barbara Callison, Waldo Griffin, Lillian Weitzenburg Hansen, Patricia Allen Scheid, Ruth McMahon, Senator Alan Cranston, Eleanor Cranston Cameron, Walter Chronert, Ruth Erichsen, Morton MacLeod, Jim Blach, Harry "Junior" Dutton, Sammy Kahn, Rose Mary Taaffe, George Ramsey and Joe Salameda.

If you, or someone you know, is a long-term resident of Los Altos, we invite you to contact the Association of the Los Altos Historical Museum Office to arrange for a memory recording. The participant does not have to be a current Los Altos resident. You can also call to learn about becoming a History House Museum volunteer; about our exciting new Educational Center (construction completed in the Civic Center area in 2000), or to learn how you can access or contribute to the collection of past memories and artifacts of the City of Los Altos.
