Lady Owls wallop Delta

With five seconds left, an improbable three-point basket prevented the Foothill College men's basketball team from upsetting the fifth-ranked team in the state.

West Valley College pulled out a 68-66 win last Thursday in Saratoga on a three-pointer by Jono Metzeger-Jones, who hit the shot as he was falling out of bounds.

This forced the Owls to try a difficult shot of their own.

Guard Tyler McClenahan took the inbound pass, quickly dribbled up court and launched a 22-footer as time expired. The shot hit the rim and rolled out.

Although the game will go down as a loss in the record books, putting Foothill at 6-11 overall, coach Todd Petersen considered it a moral victory.

"I hope it's a sign that we're turning the corner," the second-year coach said. "We played pretty well, and I feel much better about where we are."

Petersen said he was especially impressed with how his team battled back in the second half against West Valley (12-1). The Owls trailed 42-29 at halftime and fell behind by 16 points with 12 minutes to play.

Guard Ronnie Cooke led the Foothill comeback by nailing three three-pointers in the second half. He finished with 10 points.

Samuel St. Jean scored 11 points, including a layup with 18 seconds left to put the Owls up 66-65. Foothill's top scorers were McClenahan and Carvell Wafer with 14 each. Marcus Miller had 13.

The Owls are next in action Thursday (7 p.m.) when they host Monterey Peninsula.

The Foothill women's basketball team dealt Delta an 80-54 loss last Thursday in Los Altos Hills. The Owls (12-4) needed overtime to beat Delta (13-6) a month ago at the Shasta Tournament, but a lot has changed since then.

"Delta is a good team, but they're struggling right now," Foothill coach Jody Craig said. "We're starting to put it all together and everyone's contributing."

The Owls, ranked fourth in Northern California, had six players score in double figures Thursday: Stacy Hanstad (14 points) Diseph Igoni (13) Sheree Taft and Yolanda White (12 each), Line Kongeskov (11) and Ekuah Ramsey (10).

Foothill led 41-22 at halftime, frustrating Delta with a full-court press that Craig said set the tone of the game. The Owls wound up with 24 points off turnovers and held Delta to 30.9 percent shooting.

Foothill this week plays in the De Anza Classic, which started Monday and concludes Thursday.
