Downtown construction roundup: Buildings going up, coming down along First Street
Following are updates on three construction projects, including two already underway on First Street in downtown Los Altos.
Dave Dacus of Lamb Partners, LLC, told the Town Crier that construction crews are currently pouring and forming the wall, floor, columns and other concrete elements for the underground parking garage of developer Randy Lamb’s condominium project at 100 First St. The project, he noted, remains on track for completion in spring 2014.
Bullis Charter School parents and staff brainstorm ways to make school-split work
After a two-night strategic planning session last week, Bullis Charter School Principal Wanny Hersey reported that parents continue to support the school’s mission – even in the face of a program split between two campuses next year.
The Los Altos School District, which provides facilities for the charter school, offered the charter school space on two of its campus for the next school year, Egan Junior High and Blach Intermediate schools.
Los Altos High’s boys tennis season came to an end for all but two players last week.
The fifth-seeded Eagles were eliminated by No. 4 Bellarmine 12-6 in the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section team playoffs May 6.
Front-yard libraries turn back page of time
Move over gardens and chicken coops, front-yard libraries are writing the next chapter in creative yard use.
Bucking the trend toward eReaders, Alexa Morris of Mountain View installed a miniature book exchange in her yard in March. She joins a growing network of people nationwide who are stewards of the Little Free Library movement.
Silicon Valley realtors shared their thoughts and ideas on the future of real estate at a National Association of Realtors REThink Initiative Workshop earlier this spring in Santa Clara. MLSListings Inc. hosted the workshop, attended by 125 realtors who practice in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.
According to realtors, industry experts realize that real estate faces a transformation. Last summer, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) launched the REThink Initiative to gather insights from realtors, academia, consumers and others nationwide to formulate a shared vision about the future realtors want to create for themselves, their association and the industry.
Los Altos High School’s Future Business Leaders of America members recently competed at the State Leadership Conference in Santa Clara, posting a strong performance despite tough competition.
The Los Altos team performed well in events ranging from individual test-taking to team case studies and presentations.
Beloved family restaurant retires after 30-year run
Local breakfast lovers are eating final, fond orders of biscuits, omelets and homestyle potatoes at Country Gourmet this week. The 30-year-old Mountain View restaurant is closing doors as owner Herman Shaw retires from the business.
Those who live for a weekend snack of French toast topped with grilled bananas, almonds and caramel sauce – or the other specialties at the independent diner – will have to eat their fill by Sunday. The family-run restaurant and the land on which it sits have been sold to a new owner.
BridgePoint at Los Altos is scheduled to honor centenarian Florence “Sunny” Kane, 101, at a luncheon June 5.

Festival fun: Fairs offer variety of music, art, food and wine
School’s not even out yet, but there’s a tempting aroma of summertime fun in the air as a number of regional festivals pop up on the calendar.
The best of the best seem to be centered in Wine Country, just a few scenic hours’ drive from Los Altos, but Lake Tahoe also beckons.
Author’s riches-to-rags tale offers redemption via Starbucks
Sometimes a book is successful not because it’s exceptionally well written, but because it strikes a nerve with a segment of the population. Such is the case with Michael Gates Gill’s “How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else” (Gotham, 2007).
As the afternoon sun poured through the sliding glass window, I Velcroed my 9-year-old body against the kitchen wall and felt its warmth drip down my tummy like hot fudge over vanilla ice cream. Closing my eyes, I prepared to daydream, but the darkness that engulfed me became overwhelming.
“Mom, what’s it like to be dead?” I probed, as she prepared dinner.
Reminiscent of the biblical story of Jericho, the walls of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church (MPPC) came down, figuratively speaking, April 27 and 28. In place of formal church services, MPPC and its satellite campuses, including Open Door Church in Mountain View, sent out its members to serve the community as part of its eighth annual Compassion Weekend.
“Compassion Weekend is not so much about projects as it is about people,” wrote Mission Pastor Mark Swarner in a booklet describing the service opportunities. “It is about helping children learn, the hungry eat, the lonely find community, the homeless find shelter, the hopeless find hope.”
